What language skills do you
think we should give priority to this term?
1. Writing
2. Speaking
3. Listening (to different accents!)
4. Reading
Which areas/methods should we focus the most on? - Working in the text book and using the internet! That incorporates the other areas (grammar, vocabolary) in a good way.
2.Decide in the group on one way we can practise listening
Watch documentaries and speeches with different accents. Listening to songs without knowing the lyrics is also a good way to practise listening.
3. Decide one way in the group we can practise speaking.
Have discussions around current topics. Read the texts from Context out loud in groups instead of listening from the CD.
4. Decide on AT LEAST one text from "Context 2" we can work on together.
The drover's wife.
5. Decide on one topic in the group we can do a writing assignment about.

Still homesick!
Today we continue to work on the text of "Homesick".
Thank you for your corrections and suggestions to improve Xiao's English.
I have also got your suggestions for the course and am working on them.
Today we continue to work on the text.
First of all everyone will get a chance to correct 3-4 lines orally.
Then we will look at some of the obvious problems a Chinese learner seems to have with English.
Xiao is obviously going through a culture shock. That is something you may have already experienced.
Some of our students go through a shorter form of culture shock when we travel to Uganda.
Let us do a listening exercise about this.
Xiao has other problems as well.
Chinese is not a "diplomatic" language and Chinese people are often thought of as rude in the West.
Try to help Xiao with this.
We are going to do Exercise G on page 26.
People come to Britain from so many countries to learn.
What languages do they speak?
Do the crossword in PAIRS
Finally there is the language problem of interference.
Every language has different areas of interference.
We have looked at Chinese. Here is a worksheet with some funny signs trying to be in English.
What about Swenglish then?
Finally do the exercise on YOUR OWN on the back of the worksheet.
